Vision is the Overlooked KPI

Vision is the overlooked KPI

As leaders, we’re taught to obsess over revenue, headcount, and the bottom line. While those numbers matter, they aren’t the critical measure of whether we’re actually leading. Working alongside some of the best and brightest bank and credit union leaders in the nation, I’ve come to realize that vision is the overlooked KPI.

Ask yourself, “Does my team understand the vision, AND can they speak it loudly in their daily work?”

Vision Matters More Than Numbers

Here’s the truth: if the vision is not always top of mind, you can’t expect your team to carry it forward.

If the leader is not vocalizing it, if our teams aren’t discussing it, if it doesn’t permeate through our decision-making and service delivery, then, why should clients or partners believe in it? Why should they buy in?

Vision isn’t just something written in a strategic plan and filed away. It has to live in conversations, in decisions, and in the way leaders encourage their people when things get tough. It has to be spoken into reality again and again until others start to repeat it back.

That’s when it becomes bigger than a statement; it becomes a shared belief.

The Challenge of Holding Onto Vision

And yet, holding onto vision isn’t easy. The day-to-day can cloud it. Obstacles make it feel distant. Growth can even distract from it.

Leaders who endure are the ones who make vision their priority, even when the path feels uncertain.

Putting Vision Into Practice

So, what does that look like in real life?

  • Say it out loud even when it feels repetitive.
  • Surround yourself with true allies who genuinely believe in the same values.
  • Capture and celebrate small wins that remind you progress is happening.
  • Return to vision as your North Star, the ultimate decision-making filter when things get overwhelming.

It is not unmanageable. The effort to reset the vision each day is the key.

The Courage to Speak Your Vision

Every founder, CEO, and entrepreneur has a vision that sometimes feels too big. Almost like a bold, unattainable goal. But the size of the vision isn’t the issue. It’s the courage to say it out loud.

Businesses built around bold vision are exciting. Not just numbers on a spreadsheet but ideas that inspire teams, strengthen communities, and stand the test of time. So the question is “what’s the vision you’re speaking into reality right now?”
